BMW/Mini Cooper - Head Refresh Procedure
_______________________________________________________________________
• Pre-inspect cylinder heads; Check to and insure all parts are intact,
and have arrived without damage.
Disassemble head for inspection and
clean, remove carbon and clean valve train components (without media blasting).
Failure Analysis is performed on the head and all attached components.
Everything is disassembled into parts, then cleaned, thoroughly.
Camshaft(s), If applicable, is/are checked for signs of wear, valve float, straightness,
thrust surface, and threads. Head cam journals and caps are checked for wear.
de-burred, lapped flat and made to fit precisely, to each polishing alignment dowel.
Remove and Inspect; Studs, Fasteners, Bolts, and threaded Holes for proper condition. Inspect each for damage
to threads, shank, head, and thrust surface. Check for rust, corrosion, and wear. Clean as
needed, then lubricate for re-assembly. "Chase" dirt from every threaded hole with thread chaser, solvent, "thread brush",
and compressed air. Inspect spark plug holes, clean and
restore the sealing surface. Polish the inside and outside of the spark plug access pipes.
Check all manifold and gasket mating surfaces for flatness, scratches, left over gasket material and/or sealer, and over all surface
condition."Radius", "Edge Break", file, polish, and surface lap, as needed to hand finish machining. Properly re-install all studs.
Inspect deck surface for cracks, flatness, roughness, corrosion,
scratches,
"dings", bore match up, and signs of detonation arcing.
Valve Springs Checked for damage, wear, height, pressure
and installed to correct specifications.
Inspect keepers and retainers for fit, wear and evidence of valve float.
Hand lap valves and re-inspect. Head is cleaned again, and Vacuum tested.
Final Inspection and Sign Off.
Final Assembly, using new valve seals(usually supplied with new "Head Gasket Set"), is done in "clean room" environment.
Pack with Instructions, Sign Off.

Lap, upper cap and gasket area for proper sealing.
DPR's special High Lift CAM/Spark Plug tube modification(s).
Install New DPR "Sniper™" Valve Guides.
Install New Black Nitrite +2.3mm exhaust, and +1.8mm intake valves,
TBC™ Ceramic Coat Intake and Exhaust face, and Exhaust radius.
Install New DPR PCS Valve Spring Kit(Springs and Titanium Retainers).
Super finish/Polish Rocker Shafts.
Modify block to head OIL system for better flow and distribution.
